A simpler alternative to PRTG and Zabbix – for teams that run servers
PRTG and Zabbix are capable, general-purpose monitoring tools. Z9 Monitor is narrower on purpose: it answers the questions a server team gets every day – is it up, is it backed up, will it run out of space, who owns it – without sensors to count or templates to write.
The short version
| Z9 Monitor | Typical general-purpose tool | |
|---|---|---|
| Licence | Per server: each VM, hypervisor host and physical server counts once. Network devices, storage and backup jobs are free. | PRTG is licensed by sensors – one server usually needs several (ping, CPU, memory, each disk…). Zabbix is free open source; you pay with your own time. |
| Setup | One setup program on a Windows Server VM; the quick setup reads all VMs from VMware, Proxmox or Hyper-V. About 15 minutes. | Devices, sensors or templates are added and tuned per system. |
| Backups | Built in: Veeam and Synology Active Backup restore points matched to every server, with a list of servers without a backup. | Usually through scripts, plugins or custom templates. |
| Hung VMs | Power state, guest heartbeat, ping and RDP / SSH combined – a frozen VM is shown as down. | Possible, but you build the logic yourself. |
| People | Every server has an owner and a team; staff see their own servers, tasks and alerts. Hosts and backup systems stay IT-only. | Mostly built for the IT team. |
| Reports | Uptime per server and a monthly PDF for management – availability, outages, backup coverage, capacity. | Flexible reporting, often configured by hand. |
When PRTG or Zabbix is the better choice
- You need to monitor thousands of network interfaces, applications or custom metrics in depth.
- You want to write your own checks and dashboards for almost anything – Zabbix is free and extremely flexible if you have the time.
- You already run one of them well and only need a few more checks.
Z9 Monitor can also run next to an existing tool: the network team keeps theirs, the server team gets one board for VMs, hosts, backups and drives.
When Z9 Monitor fits
- You run 10 to 500 servers on VMware, Proxmox VE or Hyper-V, backed up with Veeam or Synology.
- You want it running this afternoon, not next quarter.
- Your data must stay in your network: Z9 Monitor is self-hosted and works without internet.
- Management wants a simple monthly report, and staff outside IT should see their own servers.
Try it on your own servers
The 14-day trial includes every feature for up to 50 servers – no credit card. Install it next to your current tool and compare with your own data. Prices: editions.
